Squalicum Creek Reroute – Ph 3, 4 for Bellingham

Tiger Construction successfully completed the Squalicum Creek Re-route Phases 3 and 4 habitat enhancement project, building on two prior phases to address longstanding water quality and fish habitat issues caused by Bug Lake; a man-made gravel borrow pit created during the construction of I-5. Our scope of work centered on restoring approximately two-thirds of Bug Lake to a forested wetland, rerouting the creek through a historic channel south of the restored area, and installing a new fish-passable culvert under Squalicum Parkway. These improvements effectively reduced harmful thermal loading in the creek, extended channel length, widened riparian cover, restored riverine wetland function, and bypassed a partial fish passage barrier which delivered meaningful environmental outcomes for the Squalicum Creek salmon habitat.
